NATIONAL FINALS ROUND UP

Ysgol Rhiwabon pupils Jamie Jones, Robert Pugh, and Tom Partridge all competed in the National Finals of the 24 Game on July 12th. This was the culmination of a competition which had originally been open to every school in Wales, but was now narrowed down to the top twenty or so pupils in each age group.

The tournament was organised into three Year groups, Year 7, 8, and 9, and each competitor played three first round games, which were followed by the semi-finals, the Year finals, and eventually, the Grand Final. Jamie Jones was second in Year 7 after the first round games, won his semi-final, and came third in the Year 7 final. Robert Pugh was unlucky not to qualify for the semi-finals, being just two points away from ninth place, and Tom Partridge, playing against pupils two years older than him, also didn’t make it past the first round, but became one of only five of eighteen opponents to take any points off eventual Numeracy Champion of Wales, Natalie Jenkins, from Blackwood School.

As well as Jamie’s appearance in the Year 7 final, added Ysgol Rhiwabon interest was provided at the end of the night by yours truly, who refereed the Year 9 final, and Mr John Hotchkiss, who was chosen as the official for the Grand Final.

Jamie was extremely pleased with his prize of a pack of 24 Game cards, and a McDonald’s Extra Value meal voucher, both of which he used on his way home! However, rather than rest on his laurels, he will put his School Championships up for grabs in the last 24 Game of the term on Tuesday, defending against Tom Partridge and myself.

REGIONAL FINALS ROUND UP

Recently, Ysgol Rhiwabon entered the regional finals of the 24 Game Tournament. We are pleased to report that Jamie Jones has qualified for the Year 7 national finals, Robert Pugh has qualified for the Year 8 finals, and, having been asked by organisers to compete in order to 'make up the numbers', Tom Partridge of Year 7 has qualified for the Year 9 national finals!

The finals will take place on July 12th in either Builth Wells or Llandrindod Wells.

SCHOOL FINALS RESULT!

From the 28 competitors who started out, 3 made it to the school final. Jamie won, with Tom coming 2nd, and Liam finishing 3rd.

Their rewards, generously donated by sponsors ODEON were cinema passes entitling them to four free cinema tickets a week for 8 months, 4 months, and 2 months, respectively.

The other competitors were each given a goodie bag by ODEON, which contained, amongst other things, a free ticket.
It would have been impossible to have finished the tournament on schedule without the help of sixth formers and Year 10 students as umpires.
